{"id":747,"date":"2013-05-28T23:09:23","date_gmt":"2013-05-28T23:09:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qfuse.com\/blog\/?p=747"},"modified":"2013-05-28T23:09:23","modified_gmt":"2013-05-28T23:09:23","slug":"the-berkshire-mall-and-good-qr-code-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qfuse.com\/blog\/the-berkshire-mall-and-good-qr-code-use\/","title":{"rendered":"The Berkshire Mall and Good QR Code Use"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/qfuse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Berkshire.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-748\" alt=\"Berkshire\" src=\"http:\/\/qfuse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Berkshire-227x300.png\" width=\"227\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/qfuse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Berkshire-227x300.png 227w, https:\/\/qfuse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Berkshire.png 530w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 227px) 100vw, 227px\" \/><\/a>I was traveling through western Massachusetts a couple weeks back and had to stop by a local mall in the Berkshire\u2019s for a meeting with a customer.\u00a0 I walked in and what did I see but a large sign emphasizing a QR code.\u00a0 My day was made.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing I will say about this particular use of a QR code is that they are really using the code well by making it the focal point of their advertisement.\u00a0 But of course they don\u2019t want people to just scan the code for its own sake, but instead to direct customers to their Berkshire Mall website\/blog.\u00a0 When you use a QR code you should always have an actual purpose, rather than using a QR code just to use one.\u00a0 Whether this purpose is to drive traffic to your website or blog as we see here, or to drive sales or provide information, it does not matter, so long as there is a benefit to you or your customer.<\/p>\n<p>When you use a QR code it is vital that there be a call to action to convince someone to scan the code.\u00a0 In this case they used a call to action, so in that regards they did well.\u00a0 But the call to action is weak and doesn\u2019t make anyone go out of their way to scan the code.\u00a0 Simply saying \u201cscan here to view our website!\u201d isn\u2019t all that enticing.\u00a0 Instead, the call to action should give a reason to scan the code.\u00a0 For example in this case, they could have said something like \u201cscan to see our current sales!\u201d or some other call to action to provide a good reason to scan the code.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/qfuse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Berkshire1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-749\" alt=\"Berkshire1\" src=\"http:\/\/qfuse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Berkshire1-199x300.png\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/qfuse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Berkshire1-199x300.png 199w, https:\/\/qfuse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Berkshire1.png 368w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a>Once I scanned the code I was taken to their website\/blog, and here I noticed a couple of things.\u00a0 First, I saw that it was really a blog about the happenings at the mall; what deals were going on, where the sales were, and whatever other important events were coming up.\u00a0 From this I began to wonder why they didn\u2019t use that in their call to action, since they probably would have had many more people scanning the code if they knew what they would get out of it.<\/p>\n<p>The next thing I noticed, and a common problem I see with most QR code users, is that their website was a desktop site and not mobile optimized.\u00a0 This makes using the site very cumbersome and hard to navigate.\u00a0 Because the desktop site\u2019s main purpose was as a blog, disseminating information about the mall, there is a lot of writing, which makes it ideally awful for reading on a mobile phone.<\/p>\n<p>If you are going to use a QR code you must create a mobile optimized website or you probably shouldn\u2019t even be using a QR code.\u00a0 You might think this is a big expense, but if you use the correct <a href=\"http:\/\/qfuse.com\/get-started\/packages-and-pricing\">QR code platform<\/a>, this can cost almost nothing to create, and will ensure your QR code campaign is actually usable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/qfuse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Berkshire2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-750\" alt=\"Berkshire2\" src=\"http:\/\/qfuse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Berkshire2-198x300.png\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/qfuse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Berkshire2-198x300.png 198w, https:\/\/qfuse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Berkshire2.png 368w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/a> This particular QR code use makes sense for the mall since it is a great way to provide the thousands of smartphone wielding shoppers with relevant information and help the stores in the mall attract customers.\u00a0 A win-win for all parties involved.<\/p>\n<p>When you decide to use QR codes in your marketing or advertising campaign it is vital that you follow certain <a href=\"http:\/\/qfuse.com\/learning\/qr-code-best-practices\">best practices<\/a>, but beyond that you must make sure you do those things well.\u00a0 Use a QR code, but make it stand out.\u00a0 Have a call to action, but make sure it is enticing.\u00a0 Have a mobile optimized site, but make sure it looks good and gives the customer what they want.<\/p>\n<p>Using a QR code can be incredibly valuable, but it isn\u2019t just some throw on tool.\u00a0 It takes thought, time, and creativity to use this tool well.\u00a0 A QR code is only as good as the people directing it, so make sure you know how to get the best out of them before you start throwing them on all of your marketing and advertising materials.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was traveling through western Massachusetts a couple weeks back and had to stop by a local mall in the Berkshire\u2019s for a meeting with a customer.\u00a0 I walked in and what did I see but a large sign emphasizing a QR code.\u00a0 My day was made.
