{"id":482,"date":"2013-02-21T22:44:31","date_gmt":"2013-02-21T22:44:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qfuse.com\/blog\/?p=482"},"modified":"2013-10-25T13:03:45","modified_gmt":"2013-10-25T13:03:45","slug":"how-not-to-use-qr-codes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qfuse.com\/blog\/how-not-to-use-qr-codes\/","title":{"rendered":"How NOT to Use QR Codes: Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/qfuse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/in_flight_mag_qr-blog-full.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-483\" alt=\"in_flight_mag_qr-blog-full\" src=\"http:\/\/qfuse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/in_flight_mag_qr-blog-full-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/qfuse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/in_flight_mag_qr-blog-full-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/qfuse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/in_flight_mag_qr-blog-full.jpg 615w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>This is the first installment of an ongoing look at how NOT to use QR codes.\u00a0 As I stumble upon poor uses I will be sure to post a blog so we can all laugh at them and learn from them.<\/p>\n<h2>Entry #1: Henry Gill<\/h2>\n<p>If you look at the ad (Right), you might think \u201cwell that\u2019s kind of a cool creative way to run a QR code ad,\u201d and you wouldn\u2019t necessarily be wrong.\u00a0 The <strong>good thing is that the code stands out, it is the focus of the entire ad, and it is done in a creative way<\/strong>.\u00a0 Two problems though.\u00a0 First, and of less importance, is that only people already familiar with QR codes are going to know this is a QR code and that they can scan it, so <strong>a clarification or particularly a call to action is necessary to get the full benefit of using a QR code<\/strong>.\u00a0 Second and most importantly, <strong>this advertisement is in an in-flight magazine<\/strong>.\u00a0 Pause and think about that for a second&#8230; I&#8217;ll wait&#8230;\u00a0 Doesn\u2019t do you much good to have a QR code if your customer doesn\u2019t have access to the internet, right?<\/p>\n<h2>Make Sure Internet Access is Available<\/h2>\n<p>It is vitally important that when you are planning on using a QR code in your advertisement or marketing materials you think about where the person will be when they are likely to scan the code.\u00a0 <strong>If you know the ad is going to be in an in-flight magazine you do not use a QR code<\/strong>, because unless a person takes the magazine with them, or is looking at the magazine in the few minutes before take-off, they won\u2019t be able to scan the code.\u00a0 If your code is going to be in the subway, for another example, you will want to know if there is wi-fi or cellular reception there or not and so on for all marketing or advertising campaigns that plan on using QR codes.<\/p>\n<h2>Entice People to Scan Your QR Code<\/h2>\n<p>Towards the first mistake made in this ad, you must use a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/qfuse.com\/blog\/developing-a-call-to-action-for-your-qr-code\/\">call-to-action<\/a>.\u00a0 Most people are not going to scan a code (assuming they know that is what they are supposed to do) if they are unsure what the benefit is.\u00a0 So you must <strong>make sure there is a good reason to scan the QR code and make sure anyone reading the ad or marketing materials will be aware of this reason<\/strong>.\u00a0 Entice them to scan it, don\u2019t just place it in a sea of white and expect someone to waste precious seconds of their life scanning your potentially useless code.\u00a0 People have celebrities to follow and can&#8217;t spend their whole life risking seconds of their time finding out if your QR code is worth their time to scan.<\/p>\n<p>For most information on QR code best practices go <a href=\"http:\/\/qfuse.com\/learning\/qr-code-best-practices\">here<\/a>\u00a0and be sure to check out\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/qfuse.com\/blog\/how-not-to-use-qr-codes-part-2\/\">Part 2 of How NOT to Use QR Codes<\/a>. \u00a0And please, think before you code.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the first installment of an ongoing look at how NOT to use QR codes.\u00a0 As I stumble upon poor uses I will be sure to post a blog so we can all laugh at them and learn from them.
